Back in 2012 I anticipated the end of regular text messaging and the cost associated with it. We are almost there my friends. People all over the world have switched to using free messaging apps and its a matter of time before texting plans seize to exist.
With this said, I have been testing apps that work with your phone number free and paid all year long and I am glad to give you my top picks:
Viber
This app is becoming one of my favorite messaging apps to use. Not only is it free but also offers all the features of paid apps. Free text, calling, photo messages and location-sharing with Viber users. You can text and call family and friends all over the world free. Viber is available on all platforms: iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Bada, Nokia, and YES your desktop computer.
This app is one of the best messaging apps out there. It offers great media compression quality – Your pictures and videos do not lose their high quality as you exchange them with your friends. I also love that you are able to access all your exchanged files in one place, you do not have to keep scrolling up and loading more of the conversation. WhatsApp is available on all platforms: iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Nokia.
Facebook Messenger
Facebook Messenger has come a long way. Still has a lot to improve on but is as important to have on your phone as the other two if you are a Facebook junky. This app is available on all platforms: iOS, and Android.
For other messaging apps that do not require your phone number I’ve created a short list of the ones I liked:
